Tour Plan

  • Day 1 Nairobi
  • Day 2 Nairobi - Mount Kenya
Kenyan capital. The current Nairobi , with more than four million inhabitants, is an administrative, cultural and commercial centre that has no equal in Africa. The Somalis, Arabs, Nubians, Indians, Pakistanis, Japanese and Westerners live together with the African majority without any problems. The cosmopolitan character of Nairobi is evident from the presence of mosques, temples, synagogues and churches. The day after arrival we start the tour. In about four hours we drive to Mount Kenya, the holy mountain of the Kikuyu, the home of their god Ngei who also preserves the mysterious white - the eternal snow. When the first travellers returned from this area around 1890, they were laughed at when they told about the eternal snow on the equator. The top of Mount Kenya was not reached until around 1930. The area around Mount Kenya consists of various mountain ridges, snowfields, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls and gigantic scree slopes. At the foot of the mountains stretch dense rainforests, the habitat for many species of game and birds. If you want, you can go for a walk with a guide. The guide will tell you all about the flora and fauna and point out the tree dassies, colobus monkeys and birds. He or she can also provide information about the medicinal effects of various plants.
  • Day 3 Mount Kenya - Samburu Game Reserve, 'game drive'
  • Day 4 Samburu Game Reserve - Nyahururu Falls
We see the green rolling hills gradually give way to a drier landscape with the characteristic umbrella-shaped, prickly acacias, termite mounds and colorfully dressed Samburu herding their goats and cows here. The journey continues to the Samburu Game Reserve, which lies north of Isiolo. The last part of the drive is on a gravel road. This park is best known for the Grevy's zebra, gerenuks, reticulated giraffes and Somali ostriches. There is also a good chance of seeing elephants and crocodiles. The landscape is dominated by lava plains, deep gullies and rounded hilltops. The vegetation consists mainly of thorn bushes and acacias with gallery forests along the Ewaso Nyiro River. The Samburu , who mainly live from their goats and cattle, are closely related to the Masai; they speak the same language, Maa, and also wear red and purple-tinted clothing. We make a game drive in Samburu National Park and there is an opportunity to visit a Samburu village. We spend the night in a beautiful lodge in the middle of the park. The next day we drive south to the Nyahururu Falls, where we can descend to the falls with a local guide.
  • Day 5 Nyahururu Falls - 'game drive' Lake Nakuru NP - Nakuru
  • Day 6 Nakuru - Lake Baringo, optional boat trip
  • Day 7 Lake Baringo
  • Day 8 Lake Baringo - Lake Naivasha
We descend from the highlands into the Rift Valley. On the way to Nakuru we pass various tea plantations and then make a 'game drive' in the Nakuru National Park. This park owes its fame to the soda lake of the same name, home to thousands of flamingos and countless other bird species. On the shore of the lake you can smell the strange smell of the brackish, mineral-containing water. During the dry season, the water level can sometimes drop so much that salt deposits can be seen on the edges. Since 1986, Lake Nakuru National Park has had the 'Rhino Rescue' program, an area specifically set up to protect the rhinoceroses from extinction. The chance of encountering rhinos is therefore very high in this national park. In addition, many leopards, buffalos and giraffes live here. From Baboon cliff you have a beautiful view of the lake. In the afternoon the next day we drive to Lake Baringo . This lake is the absolute highlight for bird lovers. It is the center for bird watchers from all over the world to catch a glimpse of the more than 450 bird species that occur around the lake. You can also (optionally) go out by boat to honor the crocodiles and hippos in the lake with a visit. Hippos come out of the water at night to graze their daily 60 kilos of grass. Incidentally, they can reach speeds of about 40 km per hour. Of course we will also look for the impressive fish eagles that are common here. From Lake Baringo we drive to the highest lake in the Rift Valley; Lake Naivasha . If time permits, you can take part in an optional boat trip on the lake in the afternoon, where you will certainly encounter the many hippos that the lake is rich in. In addition, the lake has a great diversity of birds. On the banks of the lake lies the villa Elsamere, the residence of the Adamson family, who are known from the book 'Born Free'. If we are welcome, we can pay a visit here. In the garden are a number of black and white colobus monkeys, which are easy to photograph.
  • Day 9 Lake Naivasha - Masai Mara
  • Day 10 Masai Mara, game drives
  • Day 11 Masai Mara - Kisii
From Naivasha we drive to the Masai Mara game reserve, where we move into a beautiful tented lodge, where staying in a luxury tent guarantees the 'Out of Africa ' feeling. During our stay you have time to study the various game and bird species up close. During a trip through Kenya, almost everyone visits this vast area on the border with Tanzania. Not without reason, because the number of game species is gigantic. You an often see lions hunting there. The great migration of the wildebeest from the south in July/August and back from the north in October is a great experience. The 'Mara' is characterized by undulating grassland, in which acacias provide a typical African picture. This is also the habitat of the Masai. Masai Mara has the status of National Reserve, which means that, unlike the national parks, human habitation is possible. The Masai are allowed to graze their cattle in the reserve. When they are mortally threatened by the game, they have the right to kill this animal. With our truck we make beautiful 'game drives' in the park.
  • Day 12 Kissii -Serengeti National Park, 'game drive'
  • Day 13 Serengeti National Park, full day 'game drive'
From Masai Mara we drive south towards Tanzania where we spend the night in a simple but charming hotel in the border town of Kisii. Then we cross the border with Tanzania and drive to Serengeti where we spend the night in a 'tented camp', a comfortable 'wilderness' experience. From here we will explore this beautiful park and because of its enormous size, this is done by making a longer game drive during the day. This largest and most famous park in Tanzania, covers an area of 14,500 km² and has a spectacular density of game. Birdwatchers can also indulge themselves in the Serengeti. The majority of the Serengeti consists of vast open grasslands with characteristic rock formations here and there, called 'kopjes'. But there are also acacia and savannah woodlands, wooded areas along rivers and here and there a lake and even swamp areas. In addition to the well-known herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles, the Serengeti is also known for its lion population. It is not unusual to see lions several times a day, including the black-maned old males. The leopard is also relatively common here and can be found resting in trees during the day. The spectacular annual migration of the wildebeest and zebras runs in a large circle, which also involves the Masai Mara in Kenya. In the period December-January, the large herd is in the far south of the Serengeti. From March, the animals begin to move north. Between May and July, most animals are in the north and west of the park. During the period August-September, the herds are in the Masai Mara, after which they move south again from October. It is of course true that the animals do not adhere to this guideline. The amount of precipitation that falls and especially the location where that precipitation falls is decisive. It is therefore very possible that the herd can be found in the middle of the Serengeti in September.
  • Day 14 Serengeti National Park - Karatu
  • Day 15 Karatu, full day 'game drive' in the Ngorongoro Crater
  • Day 16 Karatu - Arusha
  • Day 17 Arusha - Nairobi
From the town of Karatu we leave in the morning for the spectacular Ngorongoro crater. We will explore it all day in off-road vehicles . The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of Africa's most spectacular nature reserves, not only because it is one of the largest craters in the world, but certainly also because of the great diversity and density of game. On the floor of the crater are all members of the so-called ' big five ' (elephant, lion, black rhinoceros, leopard and buffalo). The Ngorongoro crater also has a lot to offer for bird lovers. At noon we will picnic in a beautiful spot under the yellow corduroy trees in the middle of the park. The next day we make a beautiful drive towards Mto wa Mbu, where we visit a Masai market. Oddly shaped baobab trees and the view of Lake Manyara provide photogenic images. In the lively Arusha we are back in the civilized world. The next day we travel via the border town of Namanga back to Nairobi.

On the road with OAAS.

Our trips do not have a strict day-to-day excursion schedule. Below is a short description of the national parks and places that are visited during the trip. Because you spend the night during the safari in often remote places in nature, you go out with the group. With these trips you should take into account that your freedom is
limited in these places. All ‘game drives’ to observe wildlife are therefore included in the tour price. Take into account unforeseen circumstances as a result of the nature of the trip. For example, it may be necessary to change the daily schedule or even the route slightly. On average, the groups consist of 16 participants. The maximum group size is 20 people

Accommodation

We will spend the night in easy-to-set-up dome tents , which are equipped with mosquito netting at the entrance. We will provide all camping gear and a sleeping mat, except for your sleeping bag. Chairs and cutlery are provided. The facilities at some campsites are basic. In Nairobi, a mid-range hotel has been reserved near the airport. This selection gives a good impression of the hotels and campsites where we will stay during this trip.

Single room

Single travelers will be placed with other single travelers of the same gender, in
consultation. If you do not want to be placed with another participant, you can book a single room/tent for the applicable surcharge. The surcharge for this trip starts at 515 USD.

Transport

During the trip we use trucks specially equipped for safaris. These are practically
equipped trucks with storage space for your luggage. You have a good view of the
surroundings during the trip. During our visit to the Ngorongoro crater we have off-road vehicles at our disposal. The roads in Kenya and Tanzania are of varying quality. As a result, some travel days can take longer than you expect. Many parts of the road during this trip are unpaved, especially in the north of Kenya and in the west of Tanzania. Of course, you will not find any paved roads in the game parks either. A flat tire is part of the adventure.

In large cities such as Nairobi, our transport is not at your disposal and you can get
acquainted with local transport: matatus and taxis.

Travel documents

  • E-ticket: you will receive more information about the flight approximately 2
    weeks before departure.
  • Passport: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months upon your return to the Netherlands.
  • Visa for Kenya: The cost of the ETA/e-visa for Kenya is $32.50 per person
(subject to change). For Kenya, you must apply for the ETA/e-visa online
yourself . This e-visa is not required for children under 16 years of age who
    are traveling with their parents/guardians.
  • Visa for Tanzania: the visa costs $50 per person. You can apply for this online
    in advance .
  • Vaccination booklet with vaccination to prevent yellow fever.

Money matters

In Kenya and Tanzania, the currency is shilling. Check oanda.com for the current rates. It is not permitted to import this currency. It is easy to exchange at the border, it is useful to take euros or dollars in cash for this.

Pinning: possible in the larger cities such as Nairobi, Nanyuki, Nakuru, Kisii and Arusha.
Cash: US dollars
Credit cards: are accepted in some places

A guideline amount for expenses that are not included in the tour price, such as meals, drinks, other entrance fees, optional excursions and personal expenses, is at least USD200 per person per week. All entrance fees for the national parks and meals during the safari are included in the tour price.

It is customary to give tips for services rendered. To avoid having to hand out tips all the time, a tip jar is set up at the beginning of the tour, from which the (collective) tips to the drivers, guides, hotel staff, etc. are paid. The guideline for the tip jar for this trip is USD45.

Health

For these trips we recommend:

  • vaccinations against DTP, hepatitis A and yellow fever
  • malaria tablets
  • The yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for Tanzania. Therefore, take your
vaccination booklet with you on your trip.

Climate and geography

Due to the geographical diversity in Kenya and Tanzania, there are also quite large
climatic differences. In Nairobi, located at an altitude of 1670 metres, the average annual temperature is 18°C. In general, the temperature does not drop below 24°C during the day, while in some places it can cool down to around 10°C at night. It is therefore advisable to bring warm clothing for the evenings.

Rain falls during the long rainy season from March to May and during the short rainy season between mid-November and December. Rain showers usually fall towards the evening, are short and heavy and do not prevent you from travelling during this period. The coastal area has a humid tropical climate and the temperature here fluctuates around 30°C all year round. Although the traditional safari season falls in December/January, it is possible to travel through Kenya and Tanzania all year round.

Overland Crew

This trip is accompanied by a local English-speaking crew. This crew consists of an
experienced driver cook and a tour leader, Photographer who is responsible for the
organizational and technical aspects of the trip. Their extensive travel experience and expertise add value to the OAAS trip. The tour leader/camp courier also takes care of the groceries and meals. You are expected to take turns helping with cooking and washing up.
